One Health in Allergology
One Health in Allergology
Allergic diseases are still on the rise in both humans and domestic animals. For all mammalian species affected by allergies, a plethora of influence factors seems to be involved: hygiene status (environmental = meeting microbes, parasites, dirty soil etc.) and body hygiene (shampoos, shaving, deodorants, perfumes, disinfectants etc.); diet and food composition; nutritional status; food processing; endogenous (on skin, in gut) and environmental microbes (on plants, in soil); pollution of water, air and environment; medications, and many more. One Health is “a collaborative effort of multiple disciplines –working locally, nationally, and globally –to attain optimal health for people, animals, and the environment.” One Health working group has recently been established within EAACI to address the importance of One Health concept for allergic diseases. We propose to start a new task force on One Health in Allergology with the following aims:
1. To establish and maintain a network of experts from EAACI members and non-members covering various disciplines related to One Health or planetary health, including medicine, veterinary medicine, nutrition, agriculture, environmental sciences, epidemiology, microbiology
2. Write a position paper defining the terms and their relevance in allergic diseases, reviewing current state of knowledge, identifying knowledge gaps and proposing future research directions and policies
3. Based on these results write a series of more focused papers on topics like biodiversity, hygiene status, environmental pollution and climate change, antibiotics and other therapeuticals in environment, etc. and their effect on allergy
4. Connect to other organizations active in the field of one health / planetary health Representatives of multiple groups within EAACI expressed their interest to contribute to this discussion and this proposed task force.
