Assessment of the burden of plastic exposure in European countries

Assessment of the burden of plastic exposure in European countries

Plastics, composed of many polymers, are persistent in the environment due to their resistance to natural degradation processes. During degradation, they fragment into micro- (<5mm in size) and smaller nanoplastics(<1 μm). This results in the accumulation of particles in various ecosystems, mainly in marine, terrestrial habitats and in the air. In vitro studies show that micro- and nanoplastics can be toxic to cells. However, little is known about plastic impact on humans’ health and well-being.To address this knowledge gap, the Task Force will: (1) conduct a review of existing literature to understand the current state of knowledge regarding plastic accumulation and its potential impact on the well-being of theEuropean Union (EU) population; (2) will perform a survey among healthcare professionals (HCPs), which will aim to address the following objectives: to examine awareness within the EU of the nano- and microplastic burden and its human exposure; to assess the availability of data on plastic prevalence, public and patient perception of the issue, and the subjective assessment health effects, especially regarding allergies. For EAACI, it will be a new area of research activity which is not sufficiently investigated. The knowledge can be incorporated into EAACI’s educational and training programs, ensuring that the next generation of clinicians and researchers are well-informed about these contemporary challenges.
