Nutrition is one of the most relevant environmental factors able to facilitate the occurrence of allergy. EAACI recently created the workgroup on Immunomodulation and Nutrition. This highlighted the importance of defining the term “immunonutrition” and how nutrition may affect epigenetic, immunological, microbiome and disease outcomes. The task force is dedicated to providing an evidence-based definition, which can be used by healthcare professionals, researchers, families, general public, industry, professional bodies and governments. The “complicated tango” between nutrients, microbiome, epithelial barriers, metabolism and the immune system needs further clarification and standardization.
