Exercise and physical activity for asthma management: an EAACI task force position paper

Exercise and physical activity for asthma management: an EAACI task force position paper

Asthma is currently the most common respiratory condition worldwide, affecting over 350-million people. For the most part, asthma treatment includes prescribing inhaler therapies to improve symptoms, however the side-effects associated with some long-term medications can be significant. It is therefore important that alternative or supplementary treatments are considered to improve the lives of people with asthma. Exercise and physical activity are thought to improve asthma management and quality of life, however, there remains a lack of evidence-based recommendations concerning the specific type of exercise or physical activity to undertake to optimise benefit. On this basis, it is therefore important that specific exercise and physical activity-based recommendations are developed. The aim of this EAACI task force is therefore to develop a research informed practically focussed position paper detailing evidence-based exercise and physical activity recommendations that can be applied to people living with asthma.
