Update in the classification of hypersensitivity reactions to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
Update in the classification of hypersensitivity reactions to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are useful as painkillers and to reduce fever and inflammation in many diseases. Nevertheless, they frequently induce allergic reactions. These reactions can be mild or severe and can affect different organs (e.g., skin or airways). The mechanisms behind these reactions are very different, and some patients react only to one or few NSAIDs, whereas other individuals react to most of them. Unfortunately, this second scenario is very common. This heterogeneity makes it necessary to count on different diagnostic methods in order to find safe alternatives for the patient. In this task force, we are going to review the existing literature to generate an updated classification of NSAID allergy, and to provide recommendations for the diagnosis and management of these conditions. We will align this classification with the new nomenclature of allergic diseases (recently published by EAACI) and with the newly developed diagnostic tools.
